This project stems from the breath-taking view that the site offers and from the particular generosity of its sun exposure. The house is located at 1,700 m above sea level, behind the inhabited area of Vens, facing onto a mountainous chain that starts from Mount Emilius and ends with the massif of the Gran Paradiso and the Grivola. The wooden frame that makes up the weight-bearing structure can be seen in the southern façade – onto which all the internal rooms face – which has large windows and is open to the sun and the landscape, and completed by a strongly insulated wooden covering on the other sides. Solar power is used in three different ways here: accumulated directly through the windows in the south façade, stored and released more slowly by the mineral salts contained in the PCM (Phase Change Material) windows that complete the façade itself and finally transformed into electricity by the solar panels on the roof. The only other energy source used by the house is the wood that supplies the oven on the ground floor. The wood used for the structure and the facades is local larch, untreated and unpainted.

Il progetto nasce dalla strabiliante vista che il sito offre e dalla particolare generosità della sua esposizione solare. La casa è situata a 1700 metri di altitudine, alle spalle dell’abitato di Vens, affacciata su un arco montuoso che va dal Monte Emilius fino al massiccio del Gran Paradiso e alla Grivola. Il telaio in legno che ne costituisce la struttura portante rimane a vista nella facciata sud -nella quale tutte le stanze interne affacciano- in gran parte finestrata e aperta al sole e al paesaggio, mentre è completato da un involucro in legno fortemente isolato sugli altri lati. L’energia solare viene qui impiegata in tre diversi modi: accumulata in modo diretto attraverso le finestre poste nella facciata a sud, immagazzinata e rilasciata più lentamente dai sali minerali contenuti nelle vetrate PCM (Phase Change Material) che completano la facciata stessa, e infine trasformata in elettricità dai pannelli fotovoltaici disposti sulla copertura. L’unica altra fonte energetica impiegata dalla casa è la legna che alimenta la stufa/cucina, posta al piano terra. Il legno della struttura e delle facciate è Larice locale, messo in opera senza alcun trattamento o verniciatura.
